This class is opened to commissioned law enforcement officers, corrections officers and probation officers.  It is
designed as a basic course and is recommended to those who deal with gangs through the course of their duties.

Communities across America are struggling with the increase of street gangs and the problems associated with them.  Many
times police departments are unable to appropriately address the issue of street gangs due to lack of knowledge, experience
and training. If the issue is not addressed, it allows for street gangs to gain a foothold within neighborhoods which can then
take years to re-take. The youth in these neighborhoods are also at risk as street gangs influence them into what is perceived
as a glamorous life style.

Gang crimes can range from graffiti, to serious assault and homicide.  Many of these crimes may not be recognized as gang
related which can make the follow up investigation difficult or ineffective due to minimal knowledge of gang culture.

This course will prepare police officers to effectively and efficiently investigate gang related cases and recognize and identify
gang members and decipher their graffiti, as well as providing the knowledge to assist in court testimony. This course will also
provide officers’ knowledge to community based programs including gang intervention and prevention programs to combat
gang activity.
